When I was getting ready to graduate high school we had to complete 30 hours of community service and find a place to volunteer. I volunteered at the hospital I now work at, while I was volunteering I was shocked to see how many retired and elderly people were volunteering there as well. Berger talks about how rewarding volunteering is and it's something that the elderly really enjoy doing. I know this to be true by just the short amount of time I spent volunteering at my hospital. I talked to an older gentleman about why he volunteered at the hospital and how long he had been volunteering. He told me that he loved volunteering at the hospital, it gets him out of the house, and he gets to talk to so many new people everyday. He said the best part of his day is trying to get people to laugh as he takes them to different parts of the hospital. He told me he has been volunteering there for over 15 years since he retired. He said it is so rewarding to be able to do one simple thing to help touch the life of someone else. I learned a lot in my short time spent with him and I often still see him around the hospital. Volunteering is a great and rewarding task not only for the elderly and retired, but also for the younger generation as well.
