Dialectical thinking

It was interesting to me to read about the differences in Eastern and Western thought processes in Berger (2011) and how it, most agree, that these differences are a result of nurture, not nature. I think alot about these differences after seeing my husband spend 8 months in China on business. I also spent some time there with him to see the difference in the culture. There are pros and cons to always considering "the whole" when making decisions in business. The biggest barrier, from the lens of a U.S. businessman, would be the time it takes to make a decision. However, when a split second decision is made in business, it can have a negative impact on many people, families, and a society. As Berger (2011) says, "many people would consider more open, dialectical, and flexible thinking" to be a more moral way of thinking. I would tend to agree with this thought process. I think there is a healthy balance between Eastern and Western ways of thinking and I think each can learn from one another. Cultural sensitivity and understanding come into play here. It is important that we educate on other ways of thinking so as to not get too deeply rooted in our own ways.
