As I was reading the chapter and looking at the discussion post, I could not help but be grossed out by kids having sex/engaging in sexual activities under the age of fifteen. It just seems so bizarre to me, because I was so immature in middle school and there is no way I was ready for any of that as a teenager.
It is funny, though, because when I expressed this to one of my friends, she told me that she had sex very young, around age 11. I could not believe it. I do not think I even knew what sex was at 11, but she did. She was dating a middle schooler in her grade and they dated for quite a few years. The aspect of this that really struck me, however, was that she said her mom tried everything to keep her from having sex: a open door policy, parents in the house, etc. and yet it still happened.
To me, this shows that it really does not matter how uncomfortable it makes me, because it happens. Kids are going to have sex if they want to; they will find a way, so it is crucial that they know how to identify good/bad relationships, safe sex, and the ramifications of the adult decision they are making.
You have to wonder though, why do these middle schoolers want to have sex in the first place if some kids don't even think about it until high school?
