Object Permanence

As I was reading and watching the videos, I could not help but think how important object permanence is in everyday life. The fact that people eventually learn that when an object, like a toy or and animal, is hidden or moves out of sight that it still exists is imperative to our lives. The reason that I say this is because the concept of hide-and-go-seek would be lost on us all without object permanence. The child who was "it" would count and then when he or she would open his or her eyes, the child would be sure that he was alone and all of his playmates had disappeared forever. Or, another example would be when someone is following another car of friends or family, because the car in front know where they are going. Without object permanence, should another car cut you off from the car in front, you would think that the car disappeared, leaving you lost and confused. It is really such a simple thing that I take for granted every day.

  1. The reading on object permanence is a very familiar read for me. I remember my psych 100 professor going over this topic and showing us videos with infants of different ages, either understanding the concept of object permanence or confused by it.
