Bulling

Children are harsh when it comes to words and language. Starting at a young age, a child will say “No” and possibly hit or throw a toy. As a child grows older, they will learn more words and figure out certain words hurt one another. Childhood bulling has been around for many years, and it’s a problem that will continue to be around. I find it so sad when children are bullied. Bullies are in the classroom, and on the sports team that you may be a part of. I know this summer, my brother experienced bulling first hand. When any sports team gets in a tough play off and things may not be going your way, kids can feel the pressure they put on themselves and get mad at each other. Since this is an 11-U Travel baseball team we are talking about, these kids are on 5/6th grade. My brother made a mistake for a play and one of his teammates said “I could do better than that, stop sucking and you’re the weakest link on this team.” Ouch. Naturally, the 4 coaches were too involved with the game to hear this be said, but every team mom and dad who was on the sideline heard this. Of course after the game, my brother was devastated. He is not the weakest link on the team, and the player who said that makes petty mistakes often even though he finds himself to be the hotshot of the team. My brother was so upset after that horrible loss and things the player said, he walked out of the dugout crying and just wanted to leave. When he was standing there with my dad (who coaches) and grandfather (who heard everything), numerous teammates and parents came up to him saying how awesome he did that game and to ignore said player. He learned since that game to let things roll off his back, keep his chin held high and to not be buddy-buddy with this boy. He also gained a tighter friendship with the boys who came up to him and talked to him to make sure he was okay after all was said and done. For myself seeing this first hand and wanting to be a teacher, I want to be able to make a difference and not have my students go through things like this in my classroom. No one should feel put down because of a mistake. We are all born to make mistakes since that is how we learn.
