When reading the Children, Parents, and the New Media I had
a lot of thoughts going through my mind. I first started to think about this section
of the book because my parents are raising a child in a different generation
than they raised myself and my sister in. Reading about the media and children
set of many flags for me. The news right now is huge with the hurricane coming,
politics and clowns. Just this week, my brother saw an Instagram post saying clowns
were going to roll a die and whatever number the die landed on, they would “attack”
that school associated with that number. He heard (of course, rumors spread
like wildfire) that his middle school was picked. My brother is a natural born
worrier, and did not want to go to school today for fear of what would happen.
Luckily our school district was informed of what was happening and had extra
police around in case anything would happen.
Media in today’s day and age has grown for good and bad
reasons. Middle school kids are now relying on using laptops and chrome books
for school work, lent out for the school year BY the district. 10 years ago
when I was in 6th grade, we had no such thing. I had an iPod shuffle
(the little white stick) and wasn’t allowed to have that in the schools. It’s
also amazing that technology has grown so if students are out of school they
can make up work and not fall behind. It’s also hard to parent when the world
of internet is out there for children to explore if a parent isn’t keeping a
close eye on what is going on around their child. I wonder how technology and
the media will affect future generations of children as they get older.
