Childhood behavior and influences

When reading the culture of children, I could relate instantly. Children are little parrots to their older peers, or those they look up to. I am the oldest grandchild on both sides of my family, along with the oldest of 3 children. Now, even though I am the oldest I’ve seen first-hand what my younger cousins got themselves into as they grew up! The textbook defined the culture of children as “The particular habits, styles and values that reflect the set of rules and rituals that characterize children as distinct from adult society”. With that definition, it easily translates to behaviors that are passed down from child to child without adult approval. I know my brother looks up to his older cousins who are in high school. He tries so hard for them to like him so he will act “cool” in conversations with them when he doesn’t even know what he may be talking about! This can also be where children get the pet names in elementary school. My brother came home one time with one that my dad burst out laughing saying that was around when he was in school. My brothers face was total shock, thinking he was cool for having a name that no one knew before. I find it so interesting how things (Such as names, games, or the way children interact) change over time. I also find it super embarrassing knowing that’s exactly how I was 10 years ago!! Makes me wish I could go back and tell little Carlee to not behave like that!
