As I was writing my discussion post about preschool in other countries, I was struck by just how poor the American system is for not only the children, but also the parents that are dealing with expensive child care and a lack of really effective government support. Switzerland has their stuff together with child care and maternity leave, allowing expectant mothers to have fourteen weeks to take off to care for themselves and the baby.
Preschool is also compulsory, which I find to be nice. That way, all of the children are on more even footing by time kindergarten rolls around, because the children have had preschool since they were four years old. It seems like a great way to not only free up some time for parents, but to also get the children more socialized and used to the environment that they will be learning in for the next thirteen years.
The U.S.... we need to get our priorities straight.
